Saint Lucians Urged to Keep an Eye on Hurricane Danny

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in coordination with the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services continues to monitor the development and progress of Hurricane Danny.

According to the Meteorological Services, as at 11:00 am today, the eye of Hurricane Danny was located near 12.5 degrees north, 44.8 degrees west or about 1100 miles / 1760 km east of the Windward Islands.  Danny is moving toward the west northwest at about 12 mph or 19 km/h and this general motion is expected for the next couple of days.  Maximum sustained winds are about 75 mph or 121 km/h and some additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours.  On this forecast track, the center of Danny is expected to pass over the Leeward Islands on Monday.

NEMO Trains Shelter Managers

Local capacity for managing emergency shelters in Saint Lucia has been enhanced following a training workshop for shelter managers held on August 17 and 18, 2015 at the conference room of the National Skills Development Centre (NSDC) in Vieux Fort.

Twenty-one persons from various District Disaster Committees and Religious Organizations benefitted from this two-day training workshop, which sought to provide designated shelters managers with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively perform required duties for the operational management of emergency shelters.

Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Economic Affairs, Planning and Social Security, has called on citizens to be on the alert as a weather system approaches the Lesser Antilles.

Tropical Storm Danny is the fourth named weather system in the Atlantic Ocean for 2015. As of 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2015, the system was 1,595 miles east of Saint Lucia and the Windward Islands, moving at about 12 miles per hour.
